Basic PC Parts Checklist

  • Motherboard
    • What size is it:
      microATX ATX ExtendedATX?
    • What type of CPU does it require? Is it upgradeable for future CPU's?
    • What kind of memory does it support:
      SDRAM DDR Other? How many slots?
    • Does it support AGP or PCI-Express video cards?
    • How many PCI slots does it have?
    • Does it have built-in IDE controllers? How many IDE channels?
    • Does it have built-in Serial-ATA controllers? How many Serial-ATA channels?
    • Are there any other built in features:
      Video Audio Modem Network/LAN Wireless LAN USB 1.1/USB 2.0 Firewire/IEEE 1394?
  • PC Case
    • Dimensions?
    • Is it suitable for the type and size of Motherboard?
    • How many 3.5" and 5.25" bays does it have? Does it allow for future addition of more devices?
    • Does it have pre-cut mounts for Case fans? If so, how many and what size fans?
    • Is it supplied with a PSU? If so, what power rating is it? Is it AMD / Pentium4 approved (if applicable)?
  • PSU (if not supplied with PC Case)
    • Is it a suitable type for the Motherboard?
    • What power rating is it? Is it AMD / Pentium4 approved (if applicable)?
    • Is it the correct size for the PC Case?
  • CPU
    • Is it listed in the manual as compatible with the motherboard?
    • Is it supplied with a Heatsink and Fan?
  • Heatsink and Fan (if not supplied with CPU)
    • Are they adequate for the CPU type and speed? AMD / Pentium4 approved (if applicable)?
    • Fan power connector type:
      Motherboard (3 pin) PSU (4 pin)?
  • Memory
    • Is it a suitable type for the Motherboard?
    • Is it sufficient for the requirements of the proposed Operating System/Applications/Games?
  • FDD
    • Is it a PC-compatible type?
    • Does it have a front-bezel colour to match the PC Case?
  • HDD
    • Is it a suitable type for the Motherboard controller:
      IDE S-ATA Other?
    • Is it a suitable speed for the Motherboard controller:
      ATA33 ATA66 ATA100 ATA133 ATA150 (S-ATA)?
    • Does it have sufficient capacity for the requirements of the proposed Operating System/Applications/Games?
  • CD-ROM / CD-Writer / DVD-ROM / DVD-Writer
    • Does it have a front-bezel colour to match the PC Case?
    • Is it a suitable type for the Motherboard controller:
      IDE S-ATA Other?
    • Is it sufficient for the requirements of the proposed Operating System/Applications/Games?
  • Video Card (if not built-in to Motherboard already)
    • Is it a suitable type for the Motherboard:
      PCI-Express AGP Other?
    • Is it sufficient for the requirements of the proposed Operating System/Applications/Games?
  • Sound Card (if not built-in to Motherboard already)
    • Is it a suitable type for the Motherboard:
      PCI Other?
    • Is it sufficient for the requirements of the proposed Operating System/Applications/Games?
